Immigration between NAFTA Nations

The United States, Canada, and Mexico are continuing to make positive progress in an agreement of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Recently as of the 23rd of this month, there has been an assembly of Central Americans made up of mostly women and children who are seeking asylum in the United States from gang threats and political persecution that have gotten very bad. Mexico who has very strict laws on immigration, and is drawing attention from President Trump who tweeted that he would like to make an immigration policy part of the new NAFTA. Trump later tweeted; ”Despite the Democrat inspired laws on Sanctuary Cities and the Border being so bad and one sided, I have instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security not to let these large Caravans of people into our Country. It is a disgrace. We are the only Country in the World so naive! WALL”. After this news I had two different thoughts about the situation. One being, these people are under political prosecution and living in unsafe environments for families and children. The other way of looking at this is that they are able to seek safe harbor in their own country before migrating to our country illegally. The director of Homeland Security said that the United States will continue to prosecute illegal immigrants as they normally would and that additional actions are being taken by the DHS to reinforce our border at this time.

  1. It is always interesting to see how Trump responds to real world issues; It makes me laugh sometimes. I am not sure why he is calling our country "naive", maybe it is just to get more publicity. It does make me sad, the fact that there are families living in horrible conditions and fearing what will happen next, it makes me want to help.

  2. Ryan, I am on the same page as you with how he is very insensitive to almost all issues that deal with immigration and people of other races. On the other hand, how do we allow these people to enter our country without any type of background and immigration check. We as a nation need to make sure that we are keeping our borders safe and not allowing people of danger enter our country to do harm. With all that said, its sad that our president cant figure out a way to follow both of these principles.

  3. I think that Trump needs to fix the way he tweets because it sounds childish almost every time. By him calling our country "naive" just shows how poorly he chooses his words. I liked how you shared your two thoughts on the situation at the end of this post.

  4. It saddens me to hear that these people are seeking refuge and are getting denied. There are women, children, and families that could die because of this. I hope that somewhere down the road President Trump can change his mind toward this topic. That is a lot to ask for.

  5. It horrifies me that innocent people are being punished for conflict in their countries and now they can't even get sanctuary in a place that has traditionally been known as a safe haven. People need to put prejudices and nationalism aside and realize that these are real people who are suffering and need help. We would want to be treated as human beings if we were in their shoes.
